When was the last time you visited your dentist? We’re hoping you’re going at least every six months, which is actually the recommendation from the American Dental Association. No, it’s not just a ploy for your dentist to make more money off of you. Honestly, it’s important to keep those teeth and gums as healthy as possible with daily brushing and flossing.

Catching problems early on at regularly scheduled check-ups can prevent larger problems that often require more expensive treatment. So, going to the dentist regularly can save you time and money in the long run. Not only that, but you’d be surprised at what your dentist can tell about your overall health through your dental care visits.

The Basic Dental Care Check Up

First, let’s talk about the basic check-up. During this visit, the hygienist will evaluate the teeth and gums and likely clean your teeth to rid them of plaque build-up. Too much plaque can lead to irritated gums, bleeding, gingivitis and other more serious oral diseases. After the cleaning process is finished, the hygienist will follow up with a thorough flossing. Next, your dentist will come in and check on you.

During this portion of the visit, your dentist will not only check the health of your teeth and gums, but will also examine your tongue, throat, head, neck and face. As simple as this part of your visit seems, it’s important because this is the time where other issues can be discovered. Often times, your dentist can tell if there are any abnormalities such as swelling that can determine if you should see a physician for cancer or other issues. Additionally, dental radiographs will be taken only as needed to check for tooth decay and periodontal gum issues.  Your dentist always determines the quantity and frequency of radiographs based on each patients dental history, as well as their current dental condition.

Dental Care Tips

At Breckner Dental, we encourage daily dental care for each of our patients at any age. If you follow these few tips, it will keep up the health of your teeth and gums between visits:

  • Brush at least twice per day and make sure that you not only take your time, but that you are using a good quality toothbrush.
  • Use a good brushing technique. Brushing at an angle will help clean your teeth and gums while thoroughly brushing the surfaces will keep plaque away.
  • Replace your toothbrush about every 3 – 4 months. Just like any other equipment you use on a daily basis, your toothbrush can wear out.
  • Be sure to floss every day and be gentle. No need to make those gums bleed if you don’t have too!

Daily dental care is a simple process that will keep your teeth and gums healthier which will allow you to keep them longer. Moreover, regular dental check-ups aren’t just for teeth and gum health. Make sure to schedule your appointment every six month and keep up with it!
